COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM
SUBJECT:
title
Historical Marker for Dr. John Milton Hawks
body
DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation Department
SUMMARY:
Dr. John Milton Hawks (1826-1910), the founder of Hawks Park, is buried in the Edgewater New Smyrna Cemetery. The Recreation & Cultural Services Board, at the request of local historians, would like to place an official historical marker near the entrance to the Cemetery, to share information on Dr. Hawks and to guide people to his gravesite.
The Recreation & Cultural Services Board recommends that City Council approve the Board applying to Florida Department of State's Historical Marker Program, in order to be eligible to place this marker. This program is designed to raise public awareness of Florida’s cultural history and to enhance the enjoyment of historic sites by citizens and tourists.
Once the State grants approval to place a marker, partial grant funding can be applied for. The full cost of placing a marker is currently between $3,000 - $3,500. Historical Markers, such as the one located at the Gabordy Canal, are added to a comprehensive, state-wide public list available at: <https://apps.flheritage.com/markers/markers.cfm?county=volusia>
