1st Reading - Ordinance No. 2026-O-03: Increasing the Annual Salary for the Mayor and City Council Members
body
DEPARTMENT:
City Manager
SUMMARY:
At the November 3, 2020 General Election, the voters of the City of Edgewater approved a Charter amendment establishing the annual compensation of the Mayor at $9,512.00 and City Council Members at $7,631.00.
Since that time, the City has experienced continued population growth and expansion of municipal services, resulting in increased responsibilities and time commitments for the Mayor and City Council Members.
Section 3.05 of the City Charter authorizes the City Council to establish compensation for elected officials by ordinance.
Staff conducted a review of elected official compensation among Volusia County municipalities and found that the compensation for the City of Edgewater Mayor and Council Members is lower than that of some comparable municipalities.
Based on this review and the increased scope of duties, staff recommends increasing the annual compensation to:
• Mayor: $20,000
• City Council Members: $18,000
If approved, the increase would take effect on December 7, 2026, which is the commencement date of the terms of Council Members to be elected at the next general election.
